National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium (NBCEC) White Paper - Delivering Genomics Technology to the Beef Industry

چکیده
Artificial selection of cattle has been practiced for centuries using a variety of methods and tools. Early selection was based on visual observations that eventually lead to the development of breeds. In efforts to improve production, selection was practiced on measured phenotypic traits with limited success depending on the heritability of the trait. The next big breakthrough in selection tools was the development of statistical methodologies and computer hardware, capable of handling large data sets, to estimate the breeding values of cattle, the tool known in the U.S. as Expected Progeny Differences (EPD). Widespread usage of EPDs in the seedstock and commercial beef sectors has lead to great increases in the genetic propensity of beef cattle for a variety of traits including calving ease, growth and carcass composition.

Trends and Developments in Genetic Evaluation of Beef Cattle in the United States
Structural changes in the servicing of EPDs for US beef cattle interests have been proposed since the advent of the federally-funded National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium (NBCEC) in 2001. In the future, breed associations will use a single entity for the provision of routine servicing of genetic evaluation rather than maintain separate relationships with Land Grant Universities. In the sho...

INTRODUCTION Interest in crossbreeding in commercial cattle herds in the latter half of the 20 century sparked a flurry of experiments characterizing breeds and breed crosses for additive and nonadditive gene effects. Analytical models for estimation of these effects naturally followed. A logical extension was to apply the methodology to estimation of genetic merit from records in populations r...
متن کاملDefining Feed Efficiency in Beef Cattle
Most breeding programs have focused on improving economically relevant output traits such as growth, carcass quality and fertility to enhance the economic viability of beef production systems. Generally absent from current breeding programs in the U.S. are avenues for exploiting genetic variation in feed efficiency, even though reductions in feed inputs would substantially improve profitability...
متن کاملGenetic improvement of beef cattle in the United States: cattle, people and their interaction.
The purpose of this essay is to develop a historic perspective of the beef cattle population and the legion of people directing its genetic change so that future leadership can increase the rate of breeding technology assimilation. Use of cattle for beef to feed millions is relatively recent. The beef industry of the United States has a rich, romantic heritage that combined Spanish exploitation...
متن کاملStrategies of European Fleckvieh Cattle Breeding to Optimize Dual-purpose Breeding Particularly for Beef Production
The Fleckvieh breed, while internationally recognized as a dual-purpose breed is primarily used as a beef production animal in Ireland. However because of ever increasing pressure to improve efficiency, it is now accepted in Irish cattle breeding that beef production characteristics should be included in the national dairy cattle breeding programme. This development was accepted following a com...
